A chat with tasting room manager, Stephan
By: Susan Tissiman
Spookfontein’s new tasting room is marking its one-year anniversary since opening in December 2021. Offering views into the wine cellar, the surrounding mountain ranges and an intimate indigenous garden - depending on one’s vantage point - the modern, industrial-leaning design still manages to retain a real sense of intimacy. Curves and natural textures contrast against sharper lines, all creating a feeling of seamlessly blending into the landscape without interference. Much like the restaurant, it appears to be tucked away into the folds of the valley and surrounding fynbos while remaining a striking structure.
“Its really amazing, in the summer we can open all the doors and truly feel like we are in nature, in the garden right amongst the fynbos. Yet, in winter, with the fireplace, it is an incredibly warm, cozy and intimate space.” Says Stephan, who has been creating guest experiences with his team since day one. Mirroring the restaurant, the resulting ambience is relaxed and easy. Visitors are encouraged to truly slow down and enjoy the tasting experience and surrounds.
Stephan takes evident pride in running Spookfontein’s tastings, offering an infectious energy in sharing his knowledge and explaining just what it is that makes the wines so special. “What really stands out on our farm is our approach – the attention to detail is clear, for example, in our spontaneous fermentation methods. The wonderful nature in our region is truly expressed through our wines.” Aside from the wines, Stephan is inspired by the Spookfontein story and relishes in regaling guests with the legend – “the ghost phantom in our springs, that really captivates our visitors and certainly accompanies a tasting of our flagship Bordeaux blend, Phantom, exceptionally well.” There is certainly something special in the waters here!
So, pop in to hear the Spookfontein legend from Stephan himself. The tasting room is open seven days a week, Mondays – Saturdays from 10-5pm (last tastings at 16:30) Sunday’s and public holidays 10 – 4pm (last tasing at 15:30). A coastal vineyard, oysters are on offer every weekend, and cheese and charcuterie boards daily. Guests are also encouraged to keep an eye out for events on social media, such as the very successful 2021 Valentine’s day event (pictured).
