THE LEGEND

The name ‘Spook’ (Dutch for ‘ghost’) derives from the legend that one can discern a “spirit” within the swirls of our flowing farm spring. Perhaps it was this mystical allure that called the Davis family to this farmland two decades ago? Or perhaps it was the sheer beauty of its views and promise of award-winning wines?

Thanks to the Davis family and the many talented hands that collaborated with them, Spookfontein now stands an illustrious boutique wine farm, complete with a renowned restaurant, and traditionally-inspired accommodation for authentic Hemel-en-Aarde getaways.

THE TERROIR

In the infamous Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, nestled between the Kleinrivier and Babilonstoring Mountains, this 313 hectare farm offers aficionados a delectable variety of robust wines, grown from rocky soil and nurtured by Walker Bay’s timeless cold sea air, blown in by the Cape Doctor on summer evenings.

Originating in 1847, the farm is a Fynbos heaven, with a mere 14 hectares under vine and olive trees, which grow stoically along the winding road up to the mountaintop cellar.

THE INSPIRATION OF OUR CELLAR

With its curved organic design, constructed extensively from natural materials, architect DJ Carr ensured the cellar would not intrude on nature but embrace it.

To elevate its uniquely perched positioning further, large wrap-around windows offer our guests breath-taking views of the majestic Hemel-en-Aarde vistas and farm life, while they indulge their senses on sumptuous food and wine.

OUR WINEMAKER

With a fascination for the science and creative expression of winemaking, Nelis Uys pours his passion into extracting the very best from our grapes.

Having honed his visionary talents alongside some of South Africa’s most acclaimed vintners, Spookfontein recently welcomed Nelis to our cellar with open arms and gusto. With a diversity of interests from musicianship to diving, his innate artistry and passion for the outdoors flows through his winemaking process.

OUR HARVESTING TEAM

But crafting a wine range is no small feat; someone needs to put grapes on the table. Enter our harvesting team — a committed crew who nurture our vineyard blocks with pride and tenacity, expertly working our unique terroir to yield world class vines and grapes.
